Don't Go Down There
Don't Go Down There!!
This environment was initially conceived as a basement where unnerving acts took place. During the execution of the environment it became clear that the lighting of the scene was going to be exceptionally challenging. The problem was this, how do you make the environment dark and scary, yet visible to the viewer? A balance between light and shadow was a constant driving force in the design. Indeed, lighting is one of the key elements of the composition. Subtle colors are employed to help convey an unsettled state of mind. While the scene was at first very graphic, horrifying, and dark, it was decided to focus on the details of such a basement and try to use everyday objects to convey a sense of foreboding and fear. In essence the use of subtlety is another key element in the design. One of the strengths of this environment is the attention to detail. From the stone pebbles found on the floor, to the pipes overhead, the careful study of surfaces and the variations between surfaces help convey the feeling of uneasiness by drawing the viewer into the scene. The patterning of the mold and streaks found on the walls, all though dismissed at first glance, show us a space that is dank, dusty, and rife with mold. The pockets of darkness seen throughout the views help to convey the sense of foreboding. The viewer is unsure as to what horror may lie within, or who may slither out to do harm.
